A Commentary on “El extraño llanto de Juan Serrano” by Emil García Cabot (originally published in “El Viento y la Bruma”)

This paper offers a literary reinterpretation of “El extraño llanto de Juan Serrano”, the opening story of the novel El viento y la bruma (1998) by Argentine author Emil García Cabot. Through a narrative analysis of the text, it explores the relationship between history and fiction, as well as the symbolic construction of Patagonian identity from a contemporary perspective. The figure of Captain Juan Serrano is examined as an interplay between the experience of the conqueror and that of a modern reader, pervaded shaped by displacement and belonging. The article highlights the narrative gesture of humanizing historical characters and how, throughout fiction, a critical reinterpretation of collective memory is proposed.
